Home oxygen concentrators are typically larger than the prior, and are generally used by those who spend the vast majority of their time at home.
A huge difference between the two types, is the price. As is typical, you have to pay for convenience, making the portable machines generally more expensive. With that being said, if you feel that you won’t get much advantage of a mobile vs. home machine, go with the latter.
Price
As we’re already on the subject of cost, let’s talk a bit more about price. As this is no-doubt an important piece of equipment, we don’t recommend going with a product you know isn’t the best for you, just to save a few bucks.
If you really can swing it, we highly suggest going with the better machine. Again, the more mobile machines are going to cost a bit more due to the cost of making the machine smaller, and also taking the batteries into consideration.

It’s also crucial to remember the Medicare can sometimes cover the cost of oxygen concentrators. Medicare defines an oxygen concentrator as an equipment rental, so if a medical equipment company rents you one, they can then bill Medicare for a certain fee each month.
This sounds easy enough, right?
Well, keep in mind that oxygen equipment is only limited to a 36-month rental period of time. With that, the companies who bill Medicare can be somewhat picky about which pieces of equipment they rent out.
If you qualify for coverage, Medicare must cover you for up to 90 months. However, again, with the 36 months and oxygen equipment – once that time is up, the number Medicare provides will go down drastically.
The these other 24 months, they’ll only cover a servicing fee for the equipment you already possess, which is an extremely low amount.
National competitive bidding also makes this more difficult, as companies with the best bids are those who get contracts to provide medical devices to a particular region of the country, which lowers reimbursement amounts even further.
